Babar Azam approaches 10,000 in T20 cricket and becomes the first hitter in PSL history to achieve three thousand runs

After guiding Peshawar Zalmi to a half-century opener in the 2024 season, Babar Azam, a former Pakistan captain, became the first player in history to reach 3,000 runs in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). It was his 29th half-century in the competition. Babar needed 65 runs to reach the 3,000-run milestone, which he accomplished while attempting to assist Zalmi in pursuing a massive 207-run target against the Quetta Gladiators.

Although starter Saim Ayub scored a rapid 42 runs, Babar finished with 68 off 42, but it was insufficient for the Zalmi to prevail as they lost by 16 runs.
No player comes close to the former Pakistan captain Babar, who holds the record for most runs scored in the Pakistan Super League. But Babar’s performance on Sunday also made it possible for him to approach the renowned milestone of 10,000 runs in T20 cricket altogether. With 74 more runs to go, Babar will become the 13th player in history to reach the milestone and the second Pakistani player after Shoaib Malik, with 9,926 runs already scored.

Following Babar and Saim Ayub’s opening partnership of 91 runs, Zalmi continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. The Gladiators won in the end, even though players like Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Rovman Powell started but didn’t stick around long enough for the Zalmi to have a chance.

In the second match of the doubleheader on Sunday, the Multan Sultans triumphed against the Karachi Kings, while the Quetta Gladiators started their season with a victory. On Monday, February 19, the Gladiators will take on the reigning champion Lahore Qalandars. After taking a few days off, the Zalmi will play again in Lahore on Wednesday, February 21, against the Karachi Kings.
