Rajeshwari Kumari emulates her father Randhir by winning silver in the trap team competition at the Asian Games

President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), Randhir Singh, has a soft spot for trap shooting contests. He has played it passionately for years, so he can watch it with great interest.

Randhir Singh has dedicated his life to trap shooting, taking home gold and bronze medals in the Asian Games in 1978 and 1982, respectively.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-214580″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-k-t-rama-rao-the-leader-of-brs-criticizes-the-centers-apathy-about-the-project-to-.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com k t rama rao the leader of brs criticizes the centers apathy about the project to” width=”1195″ height=”684″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-k-t-rama-rao-the-leader-of-brs-criticizes-the-centers-apathy-about-the-project-to-.jpg 297w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-k-t-rama-rao-the-leader-of-brs-criticizes-the-centers-apathy-about-the-project-to–150×86.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1195px) 100vw, 1195px” title=”Rajeshwari Kumari emulates her father Randhir by winning silver in the trap team competition at the Asian Games 3″>

Randhir Singh, the acting president of the Olympic Council of Asia, was thus watching with great interest as members of the Indian women’s squad fought for positions in the qualifying round of the Women’s Trap competition at the Asian Games in Hangzhou on Sunday.

He was particularly interested in it because his daughter Rajeshwari Kumari was competing in Hangzhou and if she won, she would write a new chapter in the family’s history. The Indian shooters had performed exceptionally well in the entire shooting competition at the 19th Asian Games up until that point.

At the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, Randhir’s team took home a silver medal in the men’s trap team category, and his father Raja Bhalendra Singh, the OCA president, presented him with the medals.

As part of the women’s trap team, Rajeshwari Singh earned a silver medal on Sunday, October 1, 2023, with her father Randhir Singh watching from the stands.

The silver medal I received in the Men’s Trap Team category in the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi makes this a very special occasion for me. History has been rewritten today. The medal was given to me on that day by my father, who was the OCA president,” Randhir Singh said to IANS at the shotgun range at the Fuyang Yinhu Sports Center in Hangzhou.

The day before her competition, what did the father tell his daughter?

“I avoided talking to her. The day before her event, she begged me not to phone her. We have discussed other topics, but not her competition. Because one of the females (Wu Cuicui) shot 124 out of 125, which was better than that in the men’s trap, she performed well today, in fact, the whole Indian squad fared well, according to Randhir Singh.

She has a group of coaches and sports psychologists working with her. The younger generation of days want to go their own route. Additionally, since I was a shooter, a lot has changed, said Randhir Singh.

On Sunday, Rajeshwari Kumari scored 111, while Preeti Rajak and Manisha Keer, two of her colleagues, scored 112 and 114, respectively.

As a result, the Indian team came in last with a score of 337, behind the host nation China, who achieved a new world record score of 357 to win the gold medal, and Kazakhstan, who claimed third place with a score of 336.

In the Men’s trap Individual event at the 1978 Asian Games in Bangkok, Randhir, a pioneer of Indian shooting, won the gold medal. In 1982, in New Delhi, he earned the bronze. Along with Pranab Kumar Roy, Gurbir Singh, and Dr. Karni Singh, he won the silver medal for the Men’s Trap Team competition, giving him a complete set of Asian Games medals.

He was particularly delighted with the Indian shooting team’s performance in Hangzhou, which was its best ever at the Asian Games.

“The president of NRAI predicted 20 medals before to the Asian Games. There are still a few tournaments left, and we already have 21,” he noted.

Rajeshwari Kumari made history last month when she was granted an Olympic quota for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. She hopes to participate in the Paris Olympics as her father watches from the sidelines, like Randhir Singh did when the Indian Olympic Committee official watched from the stands while his son competed.

If it occurs in Paris, Randhir Singh and his family’s life will come full circle.
