Swiatek advances to the Doha quarterfinals with ease; she will next play Azarenka

<p>In the Round of 16, world No. 1 Iga Swiatek defeated No. 14 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-1, 6-4, extending her remarkable winning run at the Qatar Open.</p>

<p>After defeating Alexandrova in their Wednesday night match, Swiatek, the two-time reigning champion, has now won ten consecutive games at the competition. The triumph lasted one hour and thirty-one minutes.</p>
<p>In the quarterfinals, the Pole will now take on Victoria Azarenka, a two-time Doha winner. In the evening match, former world No. 1 Azarenka defeated No. 8 seed Jelena Ostapenko 6-0, 6-3 to record her third victory against Ostapenko of the year.</p>
<p>Swiatek defeated World No. 19 Alexandrova to extend her winning streak over Top 20 opponents to 11 games. This year, she is 4-0 versus that group. According to WTA, Swiatek’s most recent defeat by a fellow Top 20 player was against Veronika Kudermetova in the Tokyo quarterfinals in September of last year.</p>
<p>Due to an elbow injury, World No. 37 Lesia Tsurenko, Naomi Osaka’s opponent in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, had to withdraw from their match, sending the former World No. 1 into the quarterfinals.</p>
<p>Osaka, who missed all of 2022 and 2023 due to maternity leave, is playing in her first WTA Tour quarterfinal since she advanced to the Miami Open final in March of 2022.</p>
<p>Two-time WTA 1000 champion Osaka will play former World No. 1 Karolina Pliskova in the quarterfinals. Pliskova overcame fellow Czech Linda Noskova in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.</p>
