“There’s No Use Focusing on Defending Anything,” Iga Swiatek says before of the Qatar Open, brushing off previous Doha titles

This week, Iga Swiatek is aiming for her third consecutive Qatar Open championship, but the world number one said that she is approaching the competition differently this year and is not approaching it like a two-time defending champion.

Reporters on Sunday were informed by the four-time Grand Slam champion—who is once again the favorite to win the trophy in Doha—that past tournaments have no bearing on this one.

Before her first match against Romania’s Sorana Cirstea, Swiatek said, “I learned from last year that there is no point on focusing on defending anything, so it’s a totally different chapter and totally different story.”

“As we are all at various stages of life, I’m going to take things one step at a time and not really focus on what occurred a year or two ago. While it would be good if I could do well here, I’ve already discovered that tennis is a game where you can’t anticipate too much since it will always surprise you.

Despite Belarus’s Aryna Sabalenka’s triumph at the Australian Open last month, Swiatek managed to maintain her top spot in the global rankings. However, she acknowledged that she was still getting acclimated to the demands that come with being the top-ranked player on the WTA Tour.

The 22-year-old said, “I feel like I should have some standards because I’m at the top of the WTA.” Sometimes it’s more difficult to just relax because you feel like everyone is after you.

“There are certain things that have changed as a result of your current position, but I always try to remind myself that no matter where I rank or what number is next to my name, I’m still the same person.”
