Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden advanced to the semifinals of the Australian Open on Wednesday, setting up Bopanna to become the oldest tennis player to hold the top spot in the global rankings in men’s doubles.

In an hour and forty-six minutes, the 43-year-old, who had started the event as world No. 3, easily defeated the sixth-seeded Argentine pair of Maximo Gonz lez and Andr s Molteni 6-4 7-6(5) in the semifinals held here.

Following the conclusion of the competition on Monday, Bopanna will be crowned the new number uno position.

The accomplishment has great significance for Indian tennis as well as for myself. Something is needed to motivate the next generation. Sumit (Nagal) had an incredible Australian Open as well. Bopanna said to PTI in an exclusive interview from Melbourne, “He won a round.”

The top player said that making many sacrifices was necessary to achieve the achievement.

“Very pleased of this (being ranked #1 in the world in men’s doubles). This is a unique occasion. This has required many sacrifices. My family, my coaches, everyone. It seems so strange to be traveling with my family,” he said.

He is really happier that Indian tennis has been in the limelight over the previous week.

“There was absolutely nothing going on in Indian tennis. This has occurred at the ideal moment since writers like you likewise didn’t have anything to write about.

Prior to this, in October 2022, at the age of 38, American player Rajeev Ram became the oldest player to hold the top spot in the global rankings.

Ebden, nevertheless, is expected to take the second place in the global rankings.

Bopanna never won a men’s doubles major, although he did make it to the US Open final twice.

But he does have a mixed doubles trophy from the 2017 French Open, when he and Canadian partner Gabriela Dabrowski won the title by beating Robert Farah and Anna-Lena Grenfeld in the final 2 6 6 2 12 10.

However, Bopanna still hasn’t had his wish to win a men’s doubles championship at the Slam realized; this is something he wants to accomplish before giving up tennis.

“Winning a Grand Slam men’s doubles title is a personal goal.” Nobody else’s objective is this, he said.

It’s always one step at a time for the veteran.

“After you advance to the second round, you should aim for the third, fourth, quarterfinal, and semifinal rounds. Indeed, I have been in two Slam finals and naturally want to win. Regarding his future objective, Bopanna said, “You always try to go one better.”

Bopanna, who debuted at world No. 3 in 2013, is the fourth Indian player to hold the top spot in the world rankings for doubles, after Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, and Sania Mirza.

He also made sure to recognize the role that his longtime coach, Scott David of the USA, had in his incredible career advancement.

“I am perhaps Coach Scott David’s fifty-first-best player in the world. It’s a moment of pride for him as well. 2010 saw me go to doubles, and ever then, I’ve only been with him,” Bopanna said.

Over the last 12 months, Bopanna and Ebden have been among the tour’s most reliable pairings. The pair’s finest Grand Slam performance to date came when they made it to the US Open 2023 final.

The second-seeded Bopanna and Ebden had to overcome two tough matches in the first and third rounds in order to get to the semifinals today.

Bopanna and Ebden overcame Australian wildcards James Duckworth and Marc Polmans 6-7(5) 6-4 6-7(2) in the first round to overcome their first obstacle.

Their next difficult test came in the third round, when they defeated Croatian Nikola Mektic 7-6(8) 7-6(4) and Netherlands’ Wesley Koolhof, ranked 14th, 7-6(8).

And Bopanna credited his circuit experience for his ability to win tight matches.

“Having experience plays a big part in winning such games. It has taken me thirteen or fourteen years to get here, starting in 2010 when I began concentrating entirely on doubles. Bopanna, who will replace American Austin Krajicek, who fell in the second round with Croatian partner Ivan Dodig, stated, “I have been a journeyman.”

In the semi-finals, the Indo-Australian team will take against Chinese player Zhizhen Zhang and Czech Republic’s Tomas Machac, who are ranked unknown.

Mahesh Bhupathi and Somdev Devvarman, his former Davis Cup colleagues, called it one of the finest tales in Indian sports history.

“One of the greatest stories in Indian sport is, in my opinion, Rohan Bopanna becoming the world’s number one after 20 years on tour,” Bhupathi wrote on “X.”

“Four years ago, three years ago, and then five years ago, Bop informed me he was thinking of retiring. The tale’s lesson is… Who gives a damn? He is the best! I’m overjoyed for the Bopanna family! According to Devvarman, “Rohanbopanna is the best story in Indian sport.”
